The Importance of the Martial Arts School
Martial Arts schools are very important places of learning today, perhaps moreso than in the past. A typical traditional school will teach many lessons that are not taught in a public school. A student of course learns self defense, but also (depending on the school) rope and knot tying, weapons handling, general manners and politeness, nutrition and fitness info., to name a few.
Learing how to safely handle a sharp knife is a valuable lesson in patience ,focus and discipline. The care of a weapon is also important in teaching one to value ones possessions. Also, when faced with an armed opponent, a student may need every advantage available.
As our parents said about the children in their day and we notice today, manners such as please and thank you or the opening of a door for someone are no longer seen today. The typical Sensei will try to instill some sort of manners system into his students.Respect of elders and peers are lessons taught regularly.
Lessons of major importance are that of self respect and self confidence.Students are taught to respect and be proud of their abilities and accomplishments.Tests and class challanges support these ideas. A good teacher will constantly challange his students mentally and physically with tasks both inside and outside the school.
A great gift to receive is the feeling of protection and confidence that comes from the study of Martial Arts.
